Kinderdijk is the Netherlands at its most recognisable: nineteen 18th-century windmills in a row, pumping water out of the polders just as they have for centuries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, yet it never feels like a museum. It feels like a landscape that is still very much at work.
In this playbook you plan half a day among the mills. You start at the visitor centre to pick up your tickets and hear the story, then step inside a mill to see the old machinery up close, and walk along the water with a good chance of spotting birds and rabbits along the way. Wear comfortable shoes, because you will be covering quite a bit of ground.
