From 9:00 to 11:30 you're on the beach at Oostkapelle, before the heat and the crowds really kick in. You bring your own shade in your backpack and keep the kids busy with a shell-hunting mission.
The beach at Oostkapelle on the north coast of Walcheren is wide, flat, and has dune crossings every five hundred metres. Between nine and half past eleven it's quiet: little wind, cool sand, and beach bars only start setting out their terraces from half past ten onwards. For a morning with a toddler, that's a much better fit than the full afternoon.
Keep it simple. Without a beach tent you create shade with a light windbreak and a thin cotton cloth stretched between two poles. A small bucket and a spade are enough; anything bigger and a child won't carry it themselves. A shell-hunting mission works as a structured activity: not just searching at random, but find five white ones, five with a stripe, five broken ones. An hour digging, an hour walking along the water's edge, a second round of drinking water, and then back to the car.

- Apply sunscreen at home before you leave, on the beach it slides off with the sand.
- Pack a second set of dry clothes, toddlers always end up wetter than planned.
- Avoid weekends in July and August; go on a weekday or in June.
- Check the tide beforehand, at high tide the beach is narrower than you'd expect.
