A full-day meeting on a historic sailing vessel swaps the usual conference room for a very different backdrop. The ship is chartered for the day, complete with skipper, saloon or hold as a working space, and deck for breaks. Typically the group sails for an hour first, followed by a two to three hour working session in the saloon, lunch on board, and in the afternoon a second session or brainstorm out on deck.
The setting works on two levels. The absence of distractions keeps the group focused on the topic at hand. The fresh air and the water make it easier to talk about difficult things without it feeling heavy. The skipper plans the route based on the weather and makes sure the ship is back on time. Catering can be ordered in advance or brought along by the group.
