Renting a motorboat on the Vinkeveense Plassen gives you access to the clearest water in the Randstad, with white sandy bottoms and swimming beaches on the legakkers. The lakes lie between Amsterdam and Utrecht and are connected to one another via navigation channels. No boating licence is required for an open motorboat up to fifteen metres and a maximum of twenty kilometres per hour. The skipper is usually at least eighteen years old. Booking four to six weeks in advance is advisable from May through July; in the low season two weeks is plenty. Rates range between 220 and 380 euros per half-day for a six-person boat.
A maximum speed of nine kilometres per hour applies across most of the lakes, and six in the navigation channels. The sandy islands such as Eiland 4 and 7 are popular for a swimming stop. Moor at a designated mooring and not along the natural banks. BBQ on board is permitted by many rental companies at the fixed gas point, so check this in advance. Children under twelve are required to wear a life jacket, which is provided. The water is clear enough for snorkelling.
