Renting a boat for a full day in Zwolle, cruising through the city moat to the Zwarte Water and heading towards Genemuiden or Hattem, with lunch along the way.
Zwolle sits at a surprisingly rich crossroads of waterways. The ring moat around the old town connects via the Zwolle-IJsselkanaal to the Zwarte Water, which flows towards Genemuiden and the Zwartewaterland, and to the IJssel itself in the direction of Hattem and Kampen. A full day on a boat gives you the space to combine it all: morning on the city moat and along the quays by the Pelserbrugje, afternoon out on the Zwarte Water or the IJssel.
The city moat is low, narrow, and calm; boat speed here is limited to six kilometres per hour or less. Once you leave the moat things open up and you can give the engine a little more, as long as you respect commercial traffic. Eight hours is plenty for a loop of twenty-five to thirty kilometres, with a lunch stop in a harbour village or at a riverside jetty. By five o'clock the boat is moored back in the city centre.
