On a calm morning, the Spaarne is one of the more beautiful stretches of inland water in the Netherlands for learning to SUP. The river runs straight through Haarlem, past the Bavo and the Gravestenenbrug, and has just enough room to kneel, stand up, and wobble your first metres without immediately getting in the way of a tour boat. A clinic usually lasts two hours, including an on-shore briefing and paddling along a quiet stretch downstream.
The atmosphere is relaxed and accessible. An instructor explains the grip, the stance, how to fall without panicking, and how to climb back on. After that comes a loop of a few kilometres, with a short stop at a jetty to ask questions. Once you're standing, you see the city from the water: lower, quieter, and with more detail than from the quayside.

Book a two-hour clinic with a SUP school on the Spaarne, preferably outside peak hours for tour boats and water taxis.
Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet and bring a dry change of clothes, a towel, and a water bottle.
Start on shore with instruction on grip, stance, and how to fall safely before heading out onto the water.
Step on kneeling, find your balance, and slowly rise to standing using the paddle for support.
Paddle a relaxed loop towards the Gravestenenbrug and back, with a short stop at a jetty.
Wrap up with a brief evaluation on shore and consider booking a follow-up session.

Suggestions
- Choose a weekday morning for fewer boats on the water.
- Start on your knees and only stand up once the board is completely steady beneath you.
- Keep your gaze on the horizon, not on your feet. It really helps your balance.
- Fall flat to the side, not forward, and always get back on the board from the side.
- Keep your phone in a waterproof case with a cord attached to your vest.
Variations
