An evening boat ride through a Dutch city centre works so well because the pace is gentle and the view keeps changing. The canals or harbour look different at dusk than during the day: bridges light up, terraces empty out, boats move more quietly. For couples it is a great way to step out of the rhythm of everyday conversation without having to fill an entire evening with a tight schedule.
Many cities offer electric dinghies or whisper boats from spring through October, sometimes with a skipper, sometimes for self-steering. A short route winding between historic bridges and a few modern quays is usually more than enough. A simple picnic on board, a bottle of something cold and a walk after mooring round it out into a complete evening without going overboard.
