The Vechtplassen between Loenen and Loosdrecht are at their most beautiful early in the morning. Between five and eight o'clock the water is often mirror-smooth, the mist still hangs between the reeds and most motorboats are still tied up. Those who opt for a whisper boat, canoe or dinghy with an electric motor will hear little more than the bow brushing through the leaves and the calls of grebes, reed warblers and spoonbills.
A quiet morning feels different with children on board than a busy Saturday on the lakes. The pace drops, conversations grow softer, and a thermos of hot chocolate or coffee becomes a small ritual. Bring binoculars, a simple bird book or a camera, and plan to be back at the jetty before it truly gets busy. By ten o'clock everyone is back in the car, while the lakes are only just starting to warm up.

Step into a whisper boat or canoe and listen quietly for a minute to the first birds before you set off.
Cruise slowly through a narrow reed channel rather than the open lake, it gives you the most birds and the least wind.
Anchor at a quiet corner and share the breakfast you brought on board.
Ask the youngest child which bird or sound they thought was the most beautiful. That answer tends to stick.
Be back at the jetty around ten to get ahead of day-trippers and the rising wind.

- Bring blankets, it is always colder on the water than on land.
- Keep the binoculars on top of the bag, otherwise you will never reach for them.
- Avoid Saturday and choose a weekday morning instead.
- Fill your thermos before you leave, cafes and restaurants are still closed at that hour.
