The right number of spots makes the difference between a cosy living room and a space that feels like an operating theatre. And it starts not with shopping, but with measuring. With a simple rule of thumb and the function of the room in mind, you can calculate exactly what you need.
In this playbook you first measure your room and calculate the number of spots. Then you decide what kind of light you want, ambient or task lighting, and choose the type of spot that suits your interior. You finish with a lighting plan where everything falls into place, including around your furniture and art on the wall.

Measure the surface area of your room. The rule of thumb is one spot per 1.5 to 2.5 square metres, so for 20 square metres that's around 8 to 13 spots.
Determine the function of the space. A seating area calls for ambient lighting, while a dining or study area calls for task lighting.
Choose the type of spot: recessed, surface-mounted or a track system, matching your interior and preference.
Create a lighting plan. Sketch in where the spots will go and take into account the position of your furniture and artwork.
