Ghent wears its history openly. You start at the Graslei and Korenlei, where the facades mirror themselves in the Leie and the coffee tastes best with a view of the water. Wear sturdy shoes, because the cobblestones in the old city centre demand it.
From there you walk to the Sint-Baafskathedraal, where the Ghent Altarpiece hangs, and climb the twelfth-century Gravensteen for views across the rooftops. In between, you have lunch at one of the small spots around the castle, take a boat trip on the Leie, and end with a Belgian beer in a brown café. A full day, but at your own pace.
