Een Polyvalk is een vergevingsgezinde boot om op te leren zeilen, stabiel genoeg voor beginners en toch leuk om echt op te varen. Voor je de haven uitgaat controleer je de boot, pak je een reddingsvest en kijk je naar de weersverwachting. Ken de belangrijkste vaarregels en zeiltermen, en bespreek je route als het kan met iemand met ervaring.
Op het water oefen je de basis: het zeil hijsen, sturen, overstag gaan en opkruisen tegen de wind in. Voel hoe de windrichting je snelheid en koers bepaalt. Blijf kalm, gebruik de wind in plaats van ertegen te vechten, en probeer verschillende zeilstanden uit. Bij het terugvaren houd je afstand van andere boten en pas je je snelheid aan bij het naderen van de haven.
