Setting up an aquarium is part gardening, part practicing patience, and both are calming. First gather everything: a tank, filter, lighting, heater, substrate, decoration, plants, water conditioner, and of course the fish you'll add later. Rinse the tank and materials with warm water and no soap, then lay the substrate in a gentle slope, thicker at the back.
Next, install the filter, heater, and lighting according to the manual and check that everything works; tropical fish usually need water between 24 and 26 degrees. Plant the aquarium plants with room to grow and secure any decoration firmly as hiding spots. Fill the water carefully, add conditioner, and let the tank run for at least 24 hours before introducing fish. Acclimate the fish gently, and keep things healthy with a weekly 10 to 15 percent water change.
