A weekend on a farm is something different from a weekend in a countryside Airbnb. The farm is a working place. On Saturday morning at half past five the milking machine starts up, and you hear it through the wall. At eight there is breakfast at a long table with homemade cheese and homemade bread, and the farmer's wife says something brief but clear about what is happening that day.
For children it works remarkably well. No iPad, no theme park, no entertainment. Instead, a hayloft to play in, animals in a barn, a tractor passing by. For parents: a Saturday afternoon on a terrace behind the farm with a beer and no phone signal. Two nights is usually enough to feel the transition. Three nights and it starts to sink in. Four is a real holiday.

Elke nieuwe camperplaats begint bij ons met hetzelfde ritueel. Schoenen aan, een rondje om de camper, de speelmat uitrollen en even rustig oriënteren hoe alles ligt. Met een kleuter werkt dat gewoon het beste zo.

De rit die je vermijdt totdat je hem doet. Twintig minuten regenpak aantrekken, kinderen warm onder de tent, en daarna ben je over die drempel.

Een hele dag werken op een natuur-inclusieve boerderij. Geen toeristen-uitje, gewoon helpen waar nodig en samen lunchen.
Tour de Vinexwijk
Vier uur door je eigen wijk, in lussen die je nog nooit gereden hebt. Speeltuinen die je niet kende, een buurtmoestuin, en een dam waar de hond van iemand een vis vangt.
Oostkapelle strand vroege ochtend
Van 9:00 tot 11:30 uur ben je op het strand van Oostkapelle, voordat de hitte en de drukte echt losbarsten. Je neemt zelf wat schaduw mee in je rugzak en houdt de kinderen bezig met een schelpenzoektocht.
Wandeling Binnenpad Giethoorn vroeg
Een uur wandelen langs de bruggetjes van het Binnenpad, voordat het dorp vol toeristen loopt. Je vertrekt bij Museum 't Olde Maat Uus en geniet van Giethoorn op zijn rustigst.
Camperplaats boeken: welke app voor wat
Welke app je gebruikt hangt af van het type plek dat je zoekt. Kleinschalig bij een boer, gratis in de natuur, commerciële camping met faciliteiten, of een grote park-locatie. Per categorie de beste keuze plus een back-up.

Two months ahead: book a farm through a network like bedandbreakfast.nl or Slow Food NL, not through Booking. Real farms often rent out directly.
350On arrival day (Friday afternoon): arrive around 4 pm. The farmer's wife has time then to show you around. Earlier is working hours.
Boerderij De Schoolakker, TwenteFirst evening: a light meal on the farm or in a nearby village pub. Not a three-star restaurant, just village level.
60Friday evening on the terrace behind the farm: a beer, no phone. The sounds are different from home: cows in the distance, a tractor in the next field over, a bird you can't name.
On Saturday around half past five you hear the milking machine start up. You can get up to watch (ask if it's allowed) or roll over and go back to sleep. Both are fine.
Saturday morning breakfast at the long table: homemade cheese, homemade bread, homemade jam. Other guests joining. Short conversations without any pressure.
0Saturday afternoon: either a farm activity (helping knead cheese, riding the hay wagon) or a walk in the area around the farm.
Saturday evening: dinner on the farm if they offer it, otherwise at a village inn. No rush, long table.

A farm weekend with children works because the pace suits everyone. No entertainment, no programme, but plenty to see and do. That is surprisingly rare.

- Book at least two months ahead for a spring or summer weekend.
- Ask whether a morning visit to the barn is possible. Some farms allow it, others don't.
- Bring cash for the farm shop. Homemade cheese, homemade jam, homemade sausage all make great things to take home.
- Don't expect internet. On a real farm, wifi is often only available in one fixed spot.
Variations
- - Solo of duo: een minimalistische kamer in plaats van familie-suite.
- - Met grootouders en kinderen: drie generaties op een hoeve werkt verbluffend, want iedereen heeft zijn eigen tempo.
- - In de oogsttijd (augustus): drukkere boerderij, maar mooie smaken op het ontbijt.
- - In de winter: stillere boerderij, dieren binnen, andere sfeer.
