Fort Bourtange
Bourtange, Groningen
Star-shaped fort on the German border.
A perfectly preserved star-shaped fortress in eastern Groningen, built in 1593 during the Eighty Years' War. The geometric moats and bastions are best appreciated from aerial photos but walking the ramparts is equally impressive. The village inside the fort walls is still inhabited.
