The Grevelingenmeer is the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe, formed after the closure of the sea inlet 'Brouwershavense Gat' by the Grevelingendam (1965) and the Brouwersdam (1971) as part of the Deltawerken. With a water surface of 11,000 hectares and crystal-clear water, the lake attracts thousands of water sports enthusiasts, divers and nature lovers every year. The lake is a designated Natura 2000 area with remarkable flora and fauna, including seals, flamingos and the rare northern vole. Bruinisse, on the northeastern shore, is regarded as the welcoming port of the lake.
