Phone Funeral
Gratis Rustig
Bury your phone in a drawer for 24 hours. Live a full day as if it's 1995. See who you are without the extension of your hand.
Tonight: tell everyone who matters that you'll be unreachable by phone for 24 hours starting tomorrow morning. Give them an alternative way to reach you in emergency , a partner's phone, a landline, your email (which you'll check once at noon from a computer).
Set a physical alarm clock. Place your phone in a drawer, a shoebox, or a bag. Somewhere you can't casually reach for it. Close the drawer. This is the funeral.
Wake up without your phone. The first ten minutes will feel wrong , like a phantom limb. Notice the reaching. Notice the habit. Just notice.
Make breakfast without input. No recipes on a screen, no morning news scroll, no podcast. Just you, food, and the sound of your kitchen.
Go outside. Navigate by memory or by asking people. If you get lost, that's not a failure , that's an experience.
Suggestie: You'll be surprised how much you know about your own city when you're forced to remember.Waiting for a bus without a phone feels like time travel. You look at people. You read the advertisements. You notice the architecture. The world is louder and more detailed without a screen mediating it.
Spend the afternoon doing one thing fully. Read, walk, cook, visit someone, garden, draw. Whatever you choose , do only that.
Suggestie: The multi-tasking urge will peak around 2 PM. Push through it.By evening, I stopped missing it. The anxiety passed and something else showed up: a quiet, steady presence. I was just here. Fully here. When did that become so rare?
At the 24-hour mark, retrieve your phone. Before you turn it on, write down how the day felt in three words. Then turn it on. Notice how the flood of notifications feels in your body.

Suggesties
- Do this on a day off. Not because you need to be free, but because the temptation to check work email is real.
- Write down essential phone numbers on paper , in case of emergency. You probably don't know any by heart.
- Buy or borrow a cheap alarm clock. Your phone is not your alarm today.
- If you need directions, print a map or ask a human. That's how we used to do it.
