Three hours at a museum with a child under four is best handled by focusing on the colourful galleries and the sculpture garden. You are better off skipping the quiet black-and-white rooms.
The Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo sits in the middle of Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe. Spending a morning or afternoon there with a toddler works very differently than it does for adults. Quiet black-and-white rooms and abstract works do not hold a young child's attention. The colourful galleries with the Van Goghs do, because a toddler can point at yellow sunflowers or a blue field.
The sculpture garden behind the museum is just as important as the building itself. Children are free to run around there, and some sculptures can be admired from a distance without anyone saying they are standing too close. Factor in the benches: there are benches near every main gallery and throughout the sculpture garden. Three hours is a maximum, not a goal. Leaving early is better than a crying toddler at the exit.
