A birthday on the water works for groups who have had enough of celebrating in a living room. With a motorboat for seven people, the birthday person cruises along the Stadsdommel, one of the quieter stretches of water around 's-Hertogenbosch. No boating licence is required, the rental company gives instructions and the pace is slow.
The boat has room for a cake, a bag of gifts, drinks and snacks. Along the way the group passes old city walls, low bridges and spots where the city almost imperceptibly transitions into the Buitenhaven. You can moor for a coffee stop or a stroll, the helm gets passed around regularly, and the few hours on the water are calm enough for good conversation. Children are welcome on board as long as there are enough life jackets available.

Reserve a motorboat at Zelf Varen Den Bosch for three hours and pass on the number of guests and any children.
Bring a cake and candles in a sturdy box, a motorboat moves around more than a table.
Divide roles in advance: one guest as helmsperson, one guest as photographer, one guest as host for the snacks.
Head via the Smalle Haven to the Stadsdommel, it is calm enough there for singing and toasting.
Plan a mooring stop for a walk or an ice cream for the youngest guests.
Hand the birthday person back the helm for the final stretch to the mooring.

Suggestions
- Book on a weekday afternoon for a quieter trip and a lower price.
- Bring a disposable camera, it produces more fun memories than everyone staring at their phone.
- Arrange with a harbour pub to have a slice of cake or a coffee ready when you arrive.
- Keep sunscreen handy, on an open motorboat everyone burns faster than expected.
Variations
- - Doe het als kinderverjaardag met een kapiteinspet voor de jarige.
- - Combineer met een diner aan de Smalle Haven na het varen.
- - Plan in december een sloep met overkapping en warme chocomelk.
