Around midsummer, the sun in the Netherlands is still above the horizon well after nine, and twilight lingers until nearly eleven. That makes the evening perfectly suited for heading out on the water: not for speed, but for the long light. Many lakes, ponds, and rivers still have room for a dinghy, canoe, or small sailboat, and the daytime crowds have usually thinned out.
A good evening on the water is about making few choices: one lake or pond, one boat, a simple meal, and company that doesn't constantly want to switch gears. A sheltered mooring spot, some snacks, a bottle of something cold, and a few blankets are often enough. It works with kids too, as long as the boat has space and there are life jackets. Heading back to the jetty after sunset with a small light is the most peaceful part.
