Renting a sloop on the Loosdrechtse Plassen takes you through the largest continuous lake area in Noord-Holland and Utrecht. Mooring spots are mainly found at Oud-Loosdrecht, Nieuw-Loosdrecht and Breukeleveen. No boating licence is required for an open sloop up to fifteen metres and a maximum speed of twenty kilometres per hour. The skipper must be at least eighteen years old, at some rental companies twenty-one. Booking four to six weeks in advance is advisable from May through July. Rates range between 200 and 350 euros per half-day for a sloop accommodating six to eight people.
A maximum speed of nine kilometres per hour applies on most of the lakes, and six in the channels. The six connected lakes call for a good nautical chart, so take the one provided by your rental company. Small islands such as Robinson and Muyeveld offer mooring spots for lunch. BBQs on board are permitted by most rental companies, but check per boat. Children under twelve are required to wear a life jacket. Be mindful of the reed beds, which serve as a nursery for water birds, and pass them slowly.
