Renting a sloop in Volendam-Edam takes you across the Markermeer, the Gouwzee and the city canals of Edam. The Markermeer is large open water. A boating licence is not legally required for sloops up to fifteen metres and a maximum of twenty kilometres per hour, but it is strongly recommended due to wind, wave action and commercial shipping. The skipper must be at least eighteen years old; some rental companies require twenty-one because of the open water. Booking four to six weeks in advance is advisable from May through August. Rates range from 250 to 420 euros per half-day for a six-person sloop.
The standard route runs from the harbour of Volendam via the Gouwzee to Marken or the city canals of Edam. Wind above four Beaufort makes the Markermeer rough, so choose an inland route in those conditions. A BBQ on board is permitted by many rental companies on the open lakes, but is often prohibited on the city canals of Edam. Children under twelve are required to wear a life jacket, which is provided. Mooring at the jetty in Marken is free.
