The Grevelingenmeer is the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe and lies between Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee. To charter a sailing boat you need a Klein Vaarbewijs 1 once the vessel is longer than fifteen metres or faster than twenty kilometres per hour; below that you can go without. Taking a skipper along costs one hundred and fifty to two hundred and fifty euros per day on top of the rental fee. A weekend on a six- to ten-person sailing yacht runs from seven hundred to two thousand euros in May through August; for a week you should budget fifteen hundred to four thousand euros.
June and July offer the most stable south-westerly winds, averaging three to four Beaufort, and long daylight hours. The lake has no tides, so you sail at ease with straightforward navigation. Popular anchorages are the Veermansplaat, the Hompelvoet island and the nature anchorage Dwars-in-de-Weg. Brouwershaven and Bruinisse have well-equipped marinas with showers, a terrace and a supermarket within walking distance.
