The Nieuwkoopse Plassen are a protected Natura 2000 peat marsh between Nieuwkoop and Noorden, known for their reed fields, quaking fens, and colonies of black terns. For half a day, the short route through the Noordeinderplas and a stretch of peat cuttings is ideal, calm enough to spot birds without spending the entire day on the water. Rental operators are based in Nieuwkoop on the Dorpsstraat and in Noorden on the Simon van Capelweg, with electric sloops for four to six people.
No boating licence is required for sloops up to fifteen kilometres per hour. In parts of the nature reserve a speed limit of six kilometres per hour applies. Half a day costs around one hundred to one hundred and eighty euros including the battery. In peak season, book two to three weeks in advance and, if possible, choose a weekday morning for the calmest water.
