A few hours cruising between reed beds and lakeside villages, with a sloop that requires no boat license and a relaxed route past Oud-Loosdrecht.
The Loosdrechtse Plassen are one of the most well-known boating areas in the Netherlands, less than half an hour's drive from Amsterdam and Utrecht. Almost all rental companies are located along the Oud-Loosdrechtsedijk, where electric and petrol sloops are ready for groups of up to six or eight people. No boat license is required for a sloop going up to fifteen kilometres per hour, and children are welcome as long as they wear a life jacket. A half day usually lasts four hours and costs around one hundred to one hundred and eighty euros including fuel, excluding the deposit.
The short route runs past the Vuntus, with views of the mill at Loosdrecht and the villas along the Wijde Blik. In the early season, booking shortly in advance is fine, but in July and August booking two to three weeks ahead is recommended. A skipper is usually not needed, a brief instruction at the jetty is all it takes. The best months are May, June and September.
