The Oosterschelde is a large saltwater tidal inlet between Zuid-Beveland, Tholen and Schouwen-Duiveland, protected by the Storm Surge Barrier. Renting an open sailing boat under fifteen metres and twenty km per hour requires no boating licence; for cabin yachts a Klein Vaarbewijs 1 applies. Taking a skipper along costs one hundred and fifty to two hundred and fifty euros per day on top of the boat rental. Day rates from May to August range from one hundred to four hundred euros for an open boat up to six metres; a week on a family yacht costs fourteen hundred to three thousand euros.
June and July are the favourite months thanks to warmer water temperatures, an average south-westerly wind of three to four Beaufort and long daylight hours. Unlike the Grevelingenmeer, the Oosterschelde does have tides, with currents of up to two knots around the barriers. Popular destinations include Zierikzee, Sint-Annaland, the Zandkreek and the seal sandbanks near the Roggenplaat. Keep the VHF radio on for lock communications and watch the navigation opening of the Zeelandbrug.
