Half a day on the water in Utrecht is plenty to do the iconic loops without losing the whole day to logistics. You set off from a jetty on the Oudegracht or the Weerdsluis, get five minutes of instruction, and head out on the water yourself. No boating licence is required for sloops up to 15 kW, as long as you are over eighteen and keep your speed down.
A three to four hour block usually costs between 80 and 120 euros for the whole sloop, split between four to six passengers. Book well in advance, especially on Saturdays. A natural route: from the Weerdsluis along the Oudegracht to the Catharijnesingel, a short mooring stop at Park Lepelenburg, then back along the Nieuwegracht. Bring coffee and something to snack on, and there is plenty of food and drink in the wharf cellars along the way.
