pace
The sound of your own footsteps on the pavement feels different when you're carrying a bag full of homemade cookies to people you've never spoken to. Most neighbours turn out to be surprisingly open to an unexpected introduction, especially when there's something tasty involved. Some stand a little wary in the doorway at first, but the moment you explain that you're simply their neighbour, that attitude usually fades.
By the time you reach the third door, you notice the nerves making way for curiosity. You discover that the older woman three houses down has been gardening in her backyard for twenty years, or that the young couple next door just had a baby. These small five-minute conversations change the way you walk through your own street. Suddenly it's no longer just a place where you live, but a neighbourhood where you know people.

Morning: bake something simple. Cookies, banana bread, or brownies. Make enough for five households. Wrap each portion in parchment paper or a small bag.
10Suggestion: If you can't bake, buy good pastries from a local bakery. Honesty: "I didn't make these, but I wanted to bring something."Identify five doors within a few minutes' walk that belong to people you've never spoken to. Not the friendly ones, the ones you've only exchanged nods with, or never even seen.
Before you knock on the first door: feel the butterflies. This is social courage. It's supposed to feel a little uncomfortable. That's how you know it matters.
Knock on door one. When they open: "Hi, I'm [name], I live at [your address]. I realised I've never properly introduced myself. I baked these, they're for you."
Suggestion: If they seem surprised or suspicious, that's normal. Smile. Keep it brief. The gift does the talking. If they invite you in, stay 5-10 minutes max. Ask one genuine question: "How long have you lived here?" or "What do you like about this street?" Then listen.
Continue to doors two through five. Each one gets easier. By door three, you'll have a rhythm. By door five, you'll wonder why you never did this before.
Door four was an elderly man who lives alone. He held the cookies like they were made of gold. He said: "Nobody knocks on my door." We talked for fifteen minutes. I didn't want to leave.
Five doors. Five humans I've been ignoring for years. Each one had a story, a warmth, a reason to be known. Community isn't built by algorithms, it's built by knocking.
Back home, write down each person's name and something about them. Keep this list. Next time you see them, use their name. That's how neighbourhoods are made.

Suggestions
- Bake something simple the morning of. Cookies, banana bread, muffins. Homemade beats store-bought every time.
- Go on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon between 2-5 PM. People are home and relaxed.
- If no one answers, leave the treat with a note: "Hi, I'm [name] from number [X]. Just wanted to say hello."
- Don't stay longer than 5-10 minutes per door. Light touch. You're planting seeds, not holding interviews.
Variations
Plant version
Plant version: Bring a small plant or herb cutting instead of food. "I had extra basil — thought you might want some."

Question walk
Question walk: Instead of bringing something, go with a question: "I'm trying to learn one thing from every neighbour on my street. What's something you know that most people don't?"
