pace
Heidelberg is often reduced to the castle and the Hauptstraße. The quieter cafés are tucked just to either side, along the Plöck, around the Karlsplatz, in side streets like the Schiffgasse, and across the Neckar in Neuenheim. That's where patisseries, student cafés, and small roasters have found their footing, often with a courtyard or a view of the river.
A short café loop starts in the Altstadt, crosses the Alte Brücke into Neuenheim, and follows the riverbank back. The route is very manageable on foot, and most cafés are open Tuesday through Sunday. During semester time the student spots fill up in the afternoon, so mornings are your best bet for a window seat. If you're into filter coffee, Heidelberg has several specialty addresses sourcing beans directly from small roasters and happy to talk you through it. Just ask at the counter.
