Maastricht looks completely different from the water than it does from the Vrijthof. Most rental operators are based around het Bassin or Plein 1992, and for half a day (three to four hours) you typically pay between €150 and €250 for a boat that fits up to six people. No boating licence is required as long as the engine stays below 20 km/h. A short briefing at the jetty is all you need, and most boats have electric motors, pleasantly quiet and suitable for children from around age four.
The route is easy to pace: head out from het Bassin onto the Maas, pass under the Sint Servaasbrug, cruise along the Bonnefantenmuseum all the way to the Kennedybrug, then turn back. Along the way you pass the Wyck city quay, with terraces where you can moor up. Sailing near the marina at Treech is fine in a headwind, just budget a little extra time on the return leg.

Head out from het Bassin onto the Maas, keep to the right and stay clear of tour boats near the Sint Servaasbrug.

Make your turning point at the Kennedybrug, swing wide and give way to commercial traffic heading towards Borgharen.
Return the boat clean and check in advance whether the deposit is paid by card or cash, as some operators charge fuel or electricity separately.
