Lemmer sits at the crossroads of the Frisian inland waterways and the IJsselmeer, which makes it a great spot for a short sloop trip. From the harbour you can do a half-day loop past the old inner harbour, the lock complex, and a stretch of open water along the coast. Most rental operators depart from jetties right near the centre, so without a long approach you are instantly among the houseboats and waterside cafés.
A sloop for six people usually costs between one hundred and twenty and one hundred and eighty euros for half a day, fuel included. No boating licence is required for the common types up to fifteen kilometres per hour. You sail without a skipper, after a brief explanation of the engine, the map, and the lock times. Bring a windproof jacket, as there is often a stiff breeze at the mouth of the IJsselmeer.
