The Chiemsee, at just under 80 square kilometres, is Bavaria's largest lake. The general German rule for inland waterways applies here: a motorboat of up to 15 HP (11.03 kW) can be operated without a license. On the Chiemsee itself, combustion engines are heavily restricted, so electric boats, rowboats, and sailboats within the permitted class dominate. Rental stations are located in Prien-Stock, Gstadt, Übersee, and Chieming. A briefing takes around 15 minutes and covers operation, right of way, and emergency numbers.
Prices are roughly 20 to 30 euros per hour for an electric boat with four people, and daily rentals often run between 100 and 160 euros. The best time for a trip is May through September, with early mornings and weekdays being the quietest. A relaxed route takes you from Prien to Herreninsel with Schloss Herrenchiemsee, on to Fraueninsel with its monastery, and back across the open centre of the lake.
