Rent a Sloop on Breda's Singels

The singels of Breda form an almost complete ring around the city centre, fed by the Mark and the Aa of Weerijs rivers. From a sloop you see the city from a low angle: the Spanjaardsgat with its two towers, the greenery of Park Valkenberg, and the facades that rise straight from the water. Rental companies are mostly based at the Haven van Breda, right next to the centre, and offer full-day trips including route guidance.
A sloop for six people costs around two hundred and fifty euros for a full day, fuel usually included. For vessels up to fifteen kilometres per hour, no boating licence is needed. You sail without a skipper after a short briefing, or choose the skippered option if you'd rather just sit back and enjoy the view. The loop around the singels takes two to three hours at a relaxed pace, so there's plenty of time for a detour onto the Mark or a stop at a terrace.

Pack a bag with lunch, water, sunscreen, and a light jacket for the trip.
At the jetty, receive the briefing on the engine, route, and mooring spots. Sign for the deposit.
Head out of the harbour, turn left onto the singel, and pass the Spanjaardsgat with its two round towers.
Moor at a terrace or jetty for lunch and enjoy the view over the greenery of Park Valkenberg.
Take a detour onto the Mark or complete the full singel loop, then return the sloop clean.

- Cruise the singels anti-clockwise for the best light on the Spanjaardsgat.
- Watch out for cyclists on the bank when stepping ashore.
- Book ahead, on weekends sloops are often taken a week in advance.
- Don't refuel yourself, leave that to the rental company.
- Allow an hour at the end for returning, cleaning, and any refuelling.
