The Dommel near Eindhoven is a narrow urban stream with green banks, ideal for a relaxed half-day on the water. Sloops generally sail on the navigable stretch from the Eindhovens Kanaal toward the city outskirts, because further upstream the passage becomes too shallow for motorboats. An open sloop without a boating license for six to eight people costs between 100 and 175 euros for a block of three to four hours. Fuel or battery is usually included.
A half day works great for a birthday, a Friday afternoon, or a quiet Sunday. Plan a short route with a mooring stop for drinks, because without a break the time flies. When you book, the rental company will tell you which stretch of the Dommel is doable that week and whether any bridges or weirs will be temporarily closed. Book a week in advance from June through August.
