On the navigable stretch of the Lot between Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and Luzech, several rental bases offer live-aboard boats or small day-boats that require no licence. No licence is needed; a temporary pleasure-craft card is issued after an approximately one-hour briefing at the pontoon, covering boat handling, passing manual or automatic locks, and on-board safety. The boat typically accommodates four to seven people depending on the model, with a galley and bathroom facilities on the live-aboard versions.
Expect to pay around €200 to €380 for a day-boat day, and more for an overnight stay on a live-aboard. The season runs from April to October, with a pleasant lull in June and September outside school holidays. The stretch offers a close-up view of the Pont Valentré in Cahors, the hilltop village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and several picnic spots along the shaded riverbanks.

Follow the one-hour briefing at the pontoon, take a supervised test run and then receive your temporary pleasure-craft card.
Leave the base heading towards Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and calmly navigate through your first manual or automatic lock.
Moor at the foot of the hilltop village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, then walk up to the belvedere for a panoramic view over the meander.
Continue navigating, cruise along the ochre cliffs and find a shady spot for a lunch break on board.
Return to the base before the agreed time, top up the fuel if requested, then hand back the keys and the pleasure-craft card.

- Pack a fleece in your bag, as the wind can be quite cool in the gorges towards the end of the day.
