Along the stretch of the Dordogne around Sarlat, the river is shared between canoes, traditional gabares with a boatman, and a handful of licence-free electric boats offered by watersports centres near Vitrac, Cénac and Saint-Julien-de-Lampon. No licence is required for these small vessels, which are capped at six horsepower and restricted to a calm section of the river. A short briefing is all you need before heading out, the handling is straightforward and the boat comfortably seats four to six people.
Expect to pay around 90 to 180 euros for two hours and 150 to 280 euros for a half-day, depending on the season and the size of the boat. The season runs from late April to mid-October, with the most comfortable water levels in June and September. From the water, the views of the châteaux of Beynac and Castelnaud and the clifftop village of La Roque-Gageac are completely different from what you see on the road.
