The lake is salty, free of tides, and lies enclosed between Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee. With a skipper on board, nobody needs to get a sailing licence, and the focus shifts from plotting a course to listening to the wind and washing a mug in saltwater.
A typical trip starts Saturday morning in Bruinisse, with a first tack towards Hompelvoet or the Archipel. Dropping anchor happens around midday, and swimming goes on well past dinner. The night is spent on board, with a ship's lantern and a deck full of stars. Sunday is for a loop past Scharendijke, lunch on the water and the final leg home around four.
