Secret Cafés in Paris
4 h€ 15-45 Calm
A half-day stroll between independent roasters and hidden coffee bars, from the Marais to the Left Bank, with a notebook to jot down the varieties you taste.
Paris hides a specialty coffee scene far more discreet than its tourist-facing terraces. Behind a narrow shopfront in the Marais, inside a spice shop in the 1st arrondissement, or tucked at the back of a courtyard in the 7th, baristas serve precise extractions made with beans from small French roasters. The pace is unhurried, the counters short, the cups full of bright, clean notes rather than burnt bitterness.
The whole thing fits into a half-day: three or four addresses, a filter here, an espresso there, a detour to a roastery to bring a bag of beans home. You walk between each stop to let the last one settle and give your palate a chance to breathe. The notebook is for writing down the producer, the process, the harvest year, the feeling. By the end, you leave with a personal map of your favourite spots.

Place pour un paquet de grains
Start at Café Verlet, 256 Rue Saint-Honoré: choose a single-origin filter and watch the roaster work behind the wooden counter.
Walk to the Marais and step into Boot Café, 19 Rue du Pont aux Choux: a tiny former cobbler's shop, two stools, one precise espresso.
Take a fifteen-minute break on a bench in the Place des Vosges to write down the tasting notes in your notebook before moving on.
Cross the Seine to Coutume Café, 47 Rue de Babylone: compare a V60 and an espresso made from the same beans to feel the difference in extraction.
Finish by picking up a 250g bag at whichever of the three spots was your favourite, and ask the barista for the roast sheet.
