Secret Cafés in Marseille
Half a day between Noailles, Cours Julien and Le Panier to explore the Marseille specialty coffee scene, far from the terraces of the Vieux-Port.

Marseille is not the first city that comes to mind for specialty coffee, and yet. Among the grocery stores of the Noailles neighbourhood, the colourful streets of Cours Julien and the narrow alleyways of Le Panier, several roasters and baristas have set up serious counters, often in tiny spaces. The sea breeze, the sound of conversations in multiple languages, and suddenly a perfectly pulled shot on a zinc counter.
The route fits into half a morning on foot, ideally before the heat sets in. Three or four stops are enough: a single-origin filter, a bolder espresso, one last coffee taken standing at the counter before heading up to Le Panier. Between each cup, a detour through a market, a church or a view of the harbour gives the palate time to breathe. A notebook comes in handy for keeping track of the Marseille roasters' names.

Start at Deep Coffee, 30 Rue de la Paix Marcel Paul, 13001 Marseille: pick a single-origin filter and chat with the barista about recent arrivals.
Walk ten minutes towards Cours Julien and stop in front of the murals to let the first coffee settle.
Continue to Cup of Tea, 1 Rue Caisserie, 13002 Marseille: have an espresso and a small snack made with local produce.
Head up into Le Panier through the narrow alleyways and sit on the steps of the Vieille Charité to jot down the differences between the two extractions.
Finish with a coffee to go from one last roaster in the neighbourhood and walk down to the port to drink it looking out at the sea.
