The Heegermeer sits in the heart of the Frisian lake district near the village of Heeg, with plenty of open water and a short walk from the shore. A SUP clinic here often starts with dry-land practice on the grass: paddle technique, balance exercises, and stepping onto the board. Then it's time to hit the water, first kneeling, then standing. An instructor keeps an eye on posture, core engagement, and reading the wind.
The lake is known for sudden gusts, so the clinic sometimes switches between sheltered shores and open water. Along the way you pass reed beds, traditional skûtsjes, and sailing boats from the marinas of Heeg. Afterwards there's time to paddle around on your own or set the paddle down at a harbourside terrace, with a sandwich and a view of the fleet.

Suggestion: Book 1-2 weeks ahead, weekend slots fill up fastWear breathable sportswear, bring a spare set of clothes, and put your keys in a waterproof bag.
Suggestion: A wetsuit shirt prevents chafing during longer paddling sessionsTake the paddle and balance exercises on land seriously and ask for feedback on your grip and hand height.
Suggestion: Film a short clip of yourself before and after the clinicStep onto the board standing up for the first time along the sheltered shore, and feel how the hips do the work, not the arms.
Suggestion: Look at the horizon, not at your feetAlong the way, lay the paddle across the board and spend five minutes simply looking at the reeds and the skûtsjes with no particular goal.
Finish up at a harbour terrace in Heeg with something warm and jot down one technical point that improved.

Suggestions
- Book early in the season, June and September are quieter on the water.
- A wetsuit shirt prevents chafing under the arms during longer clinics.
- Apply water-resistant sunscreen to your feet and calves, they burn quickly.
- Ask whether you can hire the board for another hour after the clinic for some solo time.
- Pack a towel and dry socks in a separate bag, it makes for a much more comfortable drive home.
Variations
