Grow edible plants on your kitchen windowsill
2 h€ 50 Calm
Fresh greens within arm's reach, straight from the windowsill to your plate. Start small with herbs and harvest all year round.
You don't need a garden to snip fresh herbs while you cook. A sunny kitchen window is enough. Start with varieties that do well indoors, like basil, parsley and mint, because they need little attention and grow quickly. All you need are pots with good drainage, potting soil, seeds or seedlings, and a watering can or spray bottle. If there's limited daylight, a grow light will help.
Place your pots in a south-facing spot and make sure excess water can drain away, so the roots don't start to rot. Water regularly but not too generously: if the top of the soil feels dry, it's time. Feed your plants once a month with some plant food. And the best part comes at harvest time: snip just above a set of leaves and the plant will shoot back up, giving you a constant supply of fresh greens to finish off your dishes.
Get your supplies ready: pots or containers with drainage, potting soil, seeds or seedlings, and a watering can or spray bottle. If there's little daylight, add a grow light.
Choose plants that do well indoors. Basil, parsley and mint are ideal for beginners because they are easy to care for.
Place your pots in a sunny spot, preferably a south-facing window, and make sure there's good drainage so the roots don't start to rot.
Water regularly but avoid overwatering: if the top of the soil feels dry, it's time. Feed your plants with some plant food once a month.
Harvest your herbs regularly by snipping just above a set of leaves. This encourages new shoots and keeps you supplied with fresh greens for your dishes.
