A Frisian rental boat feels like a truck for the first thirty minutes. Too wide, too slow, you're too scared. By midday you realize the boat pretty much steers itself and you can let loose. That's when the weekend really starts.
We went with four friends, one had gotten his small boating license and was allowed to go faster than 20 km/h. That saved us half a day of crossing. On Sunday afternoon we were on the Slotermeer and the wind was coming from the wrong direction. We battled it for three hours and arrived in Sneek two hours late. The rental company said that's normal and we were too tired to be surprised.

Gather a group of three to five people. A larger number gets logistically tricky on the boat. Set up a group chat and split the costs.

Sneek, Friesland450Plan a rough route on a paper map. Not hour by hour, but with clear anchor points: Heeg on Saturday afternoon, Sloten on Saturday evening, back to Sneek on Sunday.
Friday evening you pick up the boat. Boarding takes 90 minutes because you get a rundown of all the systems. Write down the emergency numbers on a piece of paper in the wheelhouse.
0Saturday morning before departure: spend a quarter of an hour on deck with coffee. Wind, water, nobody expecting anything yet. Then the work begins.
Head toward Heeg. Along the way you practice mooring at a deserted jetty. The first time is always rough, that's part of it.
Heeg, FrieslandSaturday evening in Sloten: the boat is moored, the sun is low, everyone has a drink, and you've just spent a full day sailing together. That's the moment the weekend clicks.
Sunday back to Sneek. Plan plenty of time, because the wind can work against you. Building in a few extra hours for unexpected delays isn't wasteful, it's smart.

Suggestions
- Book at least eight weeks in advance, especially June through August. Availability is brutal.
- One person gets their small boating license beforehand, it makes a huge difference to your range.
- Do your groceries in Sneek at departure, not along the way. The villages have small shops.
- A VHF radio is a smart idea on the larger lakes, not always required but handy for bridge requests.
- Plan short legs (two hours of sailing per day), otherwise it's work and not a holiday.
Variations
- - Met kinderen: kies een boot met een vaste kuip in plaats van een open sloep.
- - In het laagseizoen (mei of september): goedkoper, minder druk, meer ruimte op het water.
- - Met meer ervaring: een zeilboot in plaats van motorboot. Veel meer werk, veel meer plezier.
