Sneek is the largest boating hub in Súdwest-Fryslân and the perfect base for exploring the Sneekermeer. Rental companies along the Houkesloot and the marinas offer sloops for up to eight people, often with an engine under 15 hp so no boating licence is required. A day on the water costs roughly 150 to 300 euros for the boat, plus fuel.
The standard route heads out via the Houkesloot onto the Sneekermeer, with the southern shore and the islands coming into view. Continuing to Terhorne on the eastern side gives you a mooring spot with terraces and a short walk. For lunch, tying up at Goingarijp or alongside a reed bank on the lake works really well. Return is usually by 18:00, so setting off around half past nine gives you a good eight hours on the water. Navigating through Sneek's city centre requires careful manoeuvring past the Waterpoort.
