Take the step to open water: learn to navigate with a map and compass and master complex manoeuvres with confidence.
Open water demands more than basic skills. Start with thorough preparation: make sure you have life jackets, a first-aid kit and a radio on board, check the weather and let someone on shore know your sailing plan. Also practise using your safety equipment, so you know what to do in an emergency.
Navigation is the heart of this step. Learn to read charts, plot a course, hold your heading with a compass and work with GPS coordinates. Then practise the manoeuvres you need: tacking, gybing and mooring, including in a busy harbour and in shifting winds. Close every session with reflection and ask an experienced sailor for feedback to sharpen your skills.
Prepare a complete safety checklist and let someone on shore know your sailing plan.
