First time solo at the helm
A small dinghy, two hours, on your own. No passenger to impress. Just learning what the boat does.

pace
With other people on the boat, you keep pretending you know what you're doing. You watch their faces instead of the water. Docking becomes a performance, not a learning moment.
Solo at the helm is different. The boat does things you never noticed before. It turns faster to the left than to the right (that's how the propeller works). It needs time to respond to the rudder. It doesn't stop when you cut the throttle, it coasts another ten metres. You only feel those details when there's no one to impress. Two hours on your own is more educational than eight hours with a group.

Reserve a small dinghy for two hours on a weekday morning. Ask specifically for a boat suitable for solo sailing.
50At the rental place: ask for a fifteen-minute walkthrough, even if you're on your own. Ask what to do if the engine breaks down.
Before you set off: sit in the boat for two minutes. Do nothing. Feel how stable or rocky it is. That's your reference point.
Start out very slowly. No faster than idle throttle. Feel how it responds to the rudder. Try a few turns.
Practice reversing on a quiet stretch. With an outboard motor the boat steers differently than with an inboard. You'll discover that here.
At some point you'll notice you're no longer thinking about what the boat is doing. It does its thing, you steer, the two are in sync. That's the moment you're really sailing.
Practice docking at a quiet jetty. Getting it wrong a few times is part of it. Nobody's watching, so nobody to impress.
Suggestion: Golden rule for docking: as slow as possible, as close to perpendicular as possible. What you just learned, you can't put into words. That's normal. Physical knowledge comes before verbal knowledge. Next time you'll feel the difference.

Suggestions
- Choose a quiet canal or lake, not a busy city waterway.
- A weekday morning works best, weekends are too crowded.
- Two hours is enough, longer gets tiring without variety.
- Life jacket on, even if you feel silly.
- Phone is fine, but keep it in a bag on the floor.
Variations
