Medieval castle in the heart of old Ghent.
Gravensteen, also known as the Castle of the Counts, is a medieval moated castle in the heart of Ghent dating from 1180, originally serving as the residence of the Counts of Flanders. With its nearly intact defensive system, thick stone walls and towers, it is the only remaining medieval castle of its kind in Flanders. Visitors can explore the arms and justice museum, including a torture chamber, and enjoy a panoramic view over Ghent's city centre. An immersive (and gently humorous) audio tour, narrated by comedian Wouter Deprez, is included with the entry ticket.
