Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel is a residential community in the municipality of Zuidplas, situated along the Hollandsche IJssel, approximately ten kilometres northeast of Rotterdam. The surrounding area offers an extensive junction network for cyclists through a water-rich polder landscape. From the village, routes are available towards Gouda, Krimpen aan den IJssel and Rotterdam, along rivers such as the Rotte and the Hollandsche IJssel. The lowest point in the Netherlands (6.76 metres below sea level) lies within the former municipal boundaries, making the cycling routes particularly special from a landscape perspective.
