tempo

Travel to a forest. Not a park with a forest section , a real forest where you can walk for 20 minutes without seeing a building.

5Suggestie: If you're in a city, you may need to take a train or bus. The journey is part of the transition.

At the edge of the forest, stop. Leave your phone in the car or turn it off. Take five deep breaths. You're crossing a threshold.

Walk slowly. Half your normal pace. There is no destination. When a path forks, take the one that looks less worn. Let curiosity lead.

Suggestie: If you catch yourself walking fast, stop completely. Stand still for 30 seconds. Then resume at half speed.
pauze

After twenty minutes of walking, find a spot to sit. A fallen tree, a patch of moss, a rock. Sit for ten minutes. Don't do anything. Let the forest forget you're here.

When you're still long enough, the forest restarts around you. A bird lands nearby. A beetle crosses your shoe. You hear rustling you didn't notice before. You're no longer a visitor , you're part of the system.

Touch things. The bark of five different trees. A leaf. The soil. Moss. A stone in a stream. Your hands are sensors , use them.

Suggestie: Notice temperature differences. A rock in shade versus one in sun. Dry bark versus wet.

Find a spot with a view , a clearing, a hill, a stream bank. Lie down if the ground allows it. Look up at the canopy. Watch the light move through the leaves.

pauze

Close your eyes for three minutes. Catalogue every sound you can hear. The wind in the branches, bird calls at different distances, your own breathing, the distant hum of the world.

Walk back slowly. Take a different path if possible. Notice how the forest looks different on the return , same trees, different light, different you.

Three hours in the forest and I solved nothing, accomplished nothing, produced nothing. But I feel restored in a way that no productivity ever achieves. I was just an animal in its habitat.

Suggesties

  • Choose a forest you can walk into, not one you drive through. The transition from urban to wild should be felt.
  • Wear shoes that let you feel the ground. Not hiking boots , something with a thinner sole.
  • Bring water and nothing else. No snacks, no book, no journal. Just you and the trees.
  • If you have the urge to photograph something beautiful, look at it for 30 extra seconds instead. Your eyes are better than any lens.
