Renting a sloop on the Kagerplassen takes you across the largest lake area near Leiden, with mooring points in Warmond, Kaag and Buitenkaag. The lakes connect to the Oude Rijn and the Ringvaart van de Haarlemmermeer. In the Netherlands, no boating licence is required for an open sloop up to fifteen metres and a maximum speed of twenty kilometres per hour. The skipper must be at least eighteen years old, sometimes twenty-one. Booking four to six weeks ahead is advisable from May through July; in low season two weeks is usually enough. Rates range from 220 to 380 euros per half-day for a sloop accommodating six to eight people.
The standard route runs via the Zweiland, the Norremeer and the Koppoel past the ferries of Kaag. The maximum speed is twelve kilometres per hour on the large lakes, and six in the channels. A BBQ on board is permitted by many rental companies at the designated gas-safe spot, so check this in advance. Children under twelve are required to wear a life jacket, which is provided. The island of Klein-Kaag offers mooring spots and a pavilion for lunch.
