A full day on the Maas from Maastricht gives you time for a real journey, not just a loop through the city. For eight to ten hours, expect to pay 250 to 450 euros for a boat up to six people, excluding fuel for petrol models. A boating licence is not required as long as the boat stays under 20 km per hour, but because the Maas is a through river with commercial shipping and locks, rental companies give a thorough briefing at the jetty. Child-friendly from age six with a life jacket.
From the Bassin you can head south via Wyck and the Bonnefantenmuseum towards Eijsden, the southernmost town in the Netherlands, mooring at the marina and enjoying a waterside terrace. Those who want to go further pass through the Ternaaien lock into Belgian Maasland. To the north lies Borgharen via the Limmel lock. Plan your turnaround around 15:00 so you are back before closing time.

Book a week in advance with a rental company around the Bassin or Plein 1992, and choose a full day (eight to ten hours) with a boat fitted with an outboard motor or a powerful electric motor to handle the current on the Maas.
Go through the briefing at the jetty and ask specifically about the Limmel lock, the Ternaaien lock, and waiting times for recreational boaters.
Head south from the Bassin under the Hoge Brug, keep to the right, and give riverboats plenty of space near the Sint Servaasbrug.
Make a lunch stop in Eijsden at the marina. Terrace De Treechter is right on the water and has guest moorings.
In the afternoon, choose between continuing to the Belgian border or heading north along the Maas towards Borgharen. Plan your turnaround well before the lock closing time.
Return to the harbour before sunset, hand the boat back clean, and check whether fuel or electricity is charged separately.

Suggestions
- Check the opening times of the Limmel and Ternaaien locks in advance, on Sundays hours are sometimes shorter.
- Bring extra drinking water, the sun on the Maas is intense in summer.
- If wind exceeds 5 Bft or the water level is high, the rental company may sometimes cancel, so keep a backup plan ready.
- A full day is enough to reach Eijsden or Borgharen, not both unless you set off early.
Variations
- - Vaar noordwaarts richting Itteren en Borgharen voor een rustigere, groenere route.
- - Combineer met een ontbijt in Wyck voor je instapt om vroeg te kunnen vertrekken.
