Renting a sloop in Maastricht takes you along the Maas through the heart of the city, past the Sint-Servaasbrug, the Hoge Brug and the Bonnefantenmuseum. The Maas here is a river with commercial shipping traffic; a boating licence is not required for sloops up to fifteen metres and a maximum of twenty kilometres per hour, but it is strongly recommended due to the current and passing vessels. The skipper must be at least eighteen years old, and some rental companies require twenty-one because of the river. Booking three to five weeks in advance is advisable from May through August. Rates range between 90 and 140 euros per hour for a sloop accommodating six people.
The Maas has commercial shipping traffic that has right of way, so stay within the yellow lines on the side. The route through Maastricht towards the Albertkanaal or southwards to Eijsden is beautiful. BBQ on board is permitted on the Maas by many rental companies, check per boat. Children under twelve are required to wear a life jacket. On the Maas, VHF channel 20 applies for commercial traffic; instructions are provided by the rental company.
